Marcus White reported from Southampton for BBC News that a former star of ITV’s The Bill, Jeff Stewart, known for his role as PC Reg Hollis for 24 years, assisted real-life police officers in the apprehension of a suspected shoplifter in Ocean Way, Southampton. The fleeing suspect fell off a bicycle while attempting to escape and was quickly handcuffed. Stewart, a local resident, arrived at the scene and helped restrain the suspect, sitting on his legs as the officers intervened. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary released a video of the arrest, showing officers expressing gratitude to the actor and even requesting a group photo.
In response to the officers’ praise, Stewart modestly acknowledged his time on The Bill, stating, “Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years, in the TV show. Yeah, I played Reg.” The body-worn police video depicted officers chasing the suspect through a car park as he tried to pedal away on a bicycle before falling off and being subdued. Stewart, dressed in shorts and sunglasses, swiftly came to the assistance of the officers in need.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary humorously remarked on the unexpected turn of events, quipping that such incidents were not part of The Bill’s script for the week. Describing Stewart as a “local TV legend,” the spokesperson noted his long-standing reputation despite retiring from Sun Hill station. Stewart departed from the popular police drama in 2008 and ventured into other creative endeavors, such as appearing in a music video for indie pop band Miike Snow and receiving recognition at the Manhattan Film Festival for his role in the film Under Jakob’s Ladder. The apprehended thief, identified as 29-year-old Mohamed Diallo from Anglesea Road, admitted to multiple thefts in Southampton and awaits sentencing by Southampton magistrates in August after being released on bail.
