Former Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham defender Joey Jones passed away at the age of 70. Jones, who earned 72 caps for his country, had a successful career with various clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea, and Huddersfield Town. His time at Liverpool was particularly memorable, winning multiple titles including a First Division title, two European Cups, a UEFA Cup, and a European Super Cup.
During Liverpool’s triumph against Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome in 1977, Jones became the first Welshman to lift the European Cup. His achievement led to fans creating a banner in his honor. In addition to his success with Liverpool, Jones also lifted the Welsh Cup during his time at Wrexham and helped Chelsea secure the Second Division title in 1983-84. He retired from professional football in 1992 at the age of 37. The Wrexham club expressed their devastation at Jones’ passing and announced plans to erect a statue in his honor at the Stok Cae Ras’ Kop Stand.
Tributes poured in from former teammates and football officials, with Mickey Thomas and John Aldridge remembering Jones as a dedicated and inspirational player. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) also expressed their sadness at the news of Jones’ passing, highlighting his iconic status in Welsh football.
