Fake Botox suspected in dozens of poisoning cases

In the past six weeks, thirty-eight cases of botulism poisoning have been reported in England due to the use of unlicensed Botox-like products in cosmetic treatments, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Botulism is a rare and dangerous condition caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which are a key component in the injections. The affected cases have been identified in the East, East Midlands, and North East regions of England. The UKHSA is advising individuals seeking cosmetic treatments to ensure that their Botox practitioner is qualified and that the products used are licensed.

Botox injections are a popular cosmetic procedure designed to reduce facial lines and wrinkles by using small, purified doses of botulinum toxin derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. However, larger quantities of the toxin can lead to botulism, a severe condition. The UKHSA has indicated that the incidents have involved the use of unlicensed Botox-like substances in certain clinics. Patients in the latest cases in East England and the East Midlands experienced difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, and breathing issues necessitating respiratory assistance.

Dr. Gauri Godbole from the UKHSA emphasized that while botulism related to aesthetic treatments is uncommon, it can have serious consequences. Symptoms may take up to four weeks to manifest, and individuals who suspect they are suffering from botulism are encouraged to contact the NHS 111 service. Botox should be prescribed following a consultation with a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or nurse, who should ensure that the person administering the injection is qualified. Dr. Alison Cave, the chief safety officer at the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, cautioned against purchasing botulinum toxin from unauthorized sources, as it significantly elevates the risk of receiving a product that does not meet UK safety standards
