Labour Party MP Diane Abbott has been suspended pending an investigation into remarks she made regarding racism, according to the BBC. As a result of this action, Abbott will now sit as an independent MP after losing the party whip. Labour has chosen not to provide any comments on the matter while the investigation is ongoing.
Abbott’s suspension follows her comments in a BBC interview, where she stated, “I just think that it’s silly to try and claim that racism which is about skin colour is the same as other types of racism.” This incident harkens back to 2023, when Abbott was suspended for a year as a Labour MP due to comments she made in a letter to a newspaper regarding racism.
In her letter to the Observer newspaper, Abbott expressed that Irish, Jewish, and Traveller individuals “undoubtedly experience prejudice” similar to racism. While she quickly retracted these comments and apologized for any distress caused, they were met with heavy criticism from Jewish and Traveller groups. Abbott was readmitted to the party shortly before the last general election, after being suspended for the controversial remarks.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner expressed disappointment in Abbott’s comments, affirming that there is no place for antisemitism in the Labour Party. Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell came to Abbott’s defense, urging people to listen to her BBC interview where she addresses antisemitism and various forms of racism.
