A recent study conducted by the RAC revealed that over 50% of the busiest airports in Britain have increased their “kiss-and-fly” fees for drop-off services near terminals. Among the 20 airports surveyed, 11 have raised their prices since July, with airports like Gatwick, Bristol, Leeds Bradford, and Southampton now charging the maximum rate of £7 for a quick park and drop-off.
Interestingly, 9 out of the top 10 busiest airports in the European Union do not impose drop-off fees, highlighting a stark contrast with the UK airports. Airports UK, representing the industry, pointed out that free drop-off options are available further away from the terminals, such as park and ride facilities, providing alternatives for travelers.
London Heathrow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Liverpool have all increased their fees by £1, now charging £6 for a 10-20 minute stop. Cardiff airport has also introduced a fee for the first time, asking for £3 for a 10-minute drop-off. The RAC’s senior policy officer, Rod Dennis, expressed concerns over the rising costs, particularly the steep £7 fee for a short stop, which could lead to frustrations among travelers this summer.
In a survey of European airports, it was found that hubs like Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle do not charge any fees for drop-offs, with only Schipol in the Netherlands requesting €2.50. Airports UK’s chief executive, Karen Dee, justified the fees as necessary for managing congestion, noise, and emissions. Some airports, like London City, do not charge a fee for drop-offs, while others like Gatwick and Southampton defend their fees as essential for sustainability and improving airport services
