BBC goes behind the scenes at Kew Gardens ahead of Palm House renovation

The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has unveiled an ambitious £50 million project to restore the iconic Palm House. This renovation will involve relocating approximately 1,300 plants to facilitate the replacement of 16,000 panes of glass.

In addition to enhancing the structural integrity of the Palm House, Kew Gardens aims to bring about a significant environmental impact through this refurbishment. By committing to reducing emissions from the Palm House to net zero, the project aligns with Kew’s dedication to sustainability.

Scheduled to commence in 2027, the renovation will necessitate the closure of the Palm House for five years. This temporary closure will allow for the comprehensive overhaul of the historic glass house, preserving its legacy for future generations.

BBC correspondent Rebecca Morell recently visited Kew Gardens to provide an exclusive glimpse into the upcoming transformation of the Palm House. Stay tuned for further updates on this monumental restoration project
