Southern Water has made the decision to implement a hosepipe ban across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, affecting nearly one million customers, due to the ongoing dry weather conditions. The ban, set to begin at 09:00 BST on Monday, will prevent the use of a hosepipe for various activities such as watering the garden, washing vehicles, or filling up paddling pools. Managing director Tim McMahon expressed his apologies to customers, emphasizing the importance of working together to ensure there is enough water for everyone and the environment.
The company revealed that the River Test and Itchen chalk streams, which are major water sources for the area, are currently at critically low levels, down by 24% compared to normal flows at this time of year. As a result, 791,000 customers in 336,000 properties in Hampshire and 144,000 customers in 75,000 properties on the Isle of Wight will be impacted by the restrictions. The Environment Agency has also highlighted that the Solent and South Downs regions are facing prolonged dry weather conditions.
In light of the upcoming ban, customers in various postcode areas are urged to take immediate action to prevent a surge in demand that could exacerbate the situation. Failure to comply with the restrictions could result in fines of up to £1,000 for hosepipe usage. Southern Water’s move follows other water companies, such as Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and South East Water, which have also enforced hosepipe bans amid the dry spell. Furthermore, Southern Water has been under scrutiny following a £90 million fine in 2021 for sewage discharge across multiple counties
