Police probe wilful fire after building in Kilmarnock collapses

In Kilmarnock, a deliberate fire engulfed several shops in the town center, causing a partial collapse of the building. The blaze, which started on the ground floor of the four-story structure on King Street around 9 p.m. on Monday, led to urgent demolition of parts of the listed building, as confirmed by East Ayrshire Council. A tattoo studio owner within the block, who witnessed his livelihood being consumed by the flames, expressed his devastation to BBC Scotland News.

As approximately 45 firefighters, six fire engines, and two specialist vehicles battled the fire into the early hours of Tuesday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported the partial collapse of the building, with the roof mostly caved in. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but residents were cautioned to keep their windows shut due to the thick smoke. The ongoing investigation is treating the fire as intentional, and authorities are appealing for any witnesses to contact the police.

Niky Brown, owner of Hard Luck Tattoo on King Street, recounted the heart-wrenching moment he received news of the fire, leaving him with “nothing left” after investing his savings into the shop just a month prior. Despite the devastating loss, local businesses offered their assistance, and a fundraiser has already raised over £20,000 to help Brown rebuild. East Ayrshire Council leaders expressed their deep sadness over the incident and highlighted the immediate impact on local businesses due to safety concerns and closures.

The aftermath of the fire prompted road closures and disruptions to neighboring establishments as authorities worked to secure the area. Group commander Paul Storrie detailed the efforts to address hot spots within the building as crews anticipated a prolonged presence at the site. While investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the council leader emphasized the collaborative efforts required to support affected businesses and restore the town center’s economic stability
