This summer, Liverpool is gearing up to host the prestigious 2025 British Chess Championships, offering a range of FREE events, giant chessboards, and coaching sessions for everyone to participate in. The main event, organized by the English Chess Federation, will take place at St George’s Hall from July 31 to August 10, but the festivities will spread throughout the city with an engaging lineup of community activities.
As the tournament approaches and during its duration, various public spaces, parks, libraries, and iconic venues will transform into arenas for chess-related events suitable for all skill levels – from novices to seasoned grandmasters. The best part is that all activities are free of charge, although some may require advance registration. With over 20 events on the schedule, participants can look forward to a diverse range of experiences.
Some notable highlights from the lineup include ChessFest at Liverpool ONE, where attendees can enjoy outdoor chess, receive free lessons, and challenge a master at Chavasse Park. Additionally, the Grand Opening Simul at Williamson Square will allow players to test their skills against Grandmasters like Simon Williams and Danny Gormally in a simultaneous display. Chess enthusiasts can also benefit from coaching sessions at the Central Library, participate in the Street Fest on Castle Street/Liverpool Town Hall, engage in the Blitz Challenge at Our Lady and St Nicholas Church, and partake in the Pop-Up Challenge at the Walker Art Gallery.
The collaborative effort behind these events involves Chess in Schools & Communities partnering with Culture Liverpool to create an inclusive, enjoyable, and family-friendly experience that aims to make chess accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. This initiative marks the second time the British Chess Championships will be held in Liverpool, with support from various organizations such as the English Chess Federation, Chess In Schools and Communities, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Chess Association, Liverpool Bid Company, UKSPF, and local chess clubs and players.
