Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) fans were left disappointed as BST Hyde Park had to cancel the final day of its festival. This decision was made after Lynne, 77, withdrew from the band’s headline slot at the last minute due to health concerns. He had initially been scheduled to lead the rock band on Sunday but decided to step back following advice from his doctors due to a “systemic infection,” as per ELO’s statement. The cancellation came shortly after the band had to pull out of a Manchester gig at the Co-Op Live arena for similar health reasons.
Last year, Lynne hinted that the BST Hyde Park show could potentially be ELO’s last live performance, stating that “It seems like the perfect place to do our final show.” Despite being “heartbroken” about not being able to perform, the band shared that Lynne is currently under the care of doctors who have advised against any performances at this time. The band stated that rescheduling is also not feasible. They emphasized that Lynne’s health and the band’s legacy are his top priorities at the moment.
Ticketholders for the cancelled performance will receive refunds and direct communication from their ticketing agent, according to BST. Lynne, a renowned singer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, founded ELO in Birmingham in 1970 alongside Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. The band is celebrated for its distinctive fusion of musical genres spanning from classical to contemporary pop and rock, characterized by a diverse range of instruments. ELO’s enduring hits like Livin’ Thing, Telephone Line, and Evil Woman are testimony to their musical legacy.
Following its initial disbandment in 1986, Lynne revived ELO in 2014. A notable comeback concert at BST Hyde Park in September that year saw Lynne collaborate with the BBC Concert Orchestra to perform some of the band’s classic hits. ELO’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, coupled with Lynne receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame two years prior, solidified their place in music history. Lynne’s contributions to music were further recognized when he was appointed an OBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list
