Political reporter Sam Francis reported that former Reform MP Rupert Lowe has been cleared after a brief investigation by Parliament’s standards commissioner. The commissioner had announced the investigation on Friday morning but revealed in a statement that the complaint has not been upheld. The BBC had initially reported that the investigation was regarding the alleged failure to register money raised in donations via a crowdfunder for Lowe’s independent “Rape Gang Inquiry.”
Lowe maintained that he had only received the donations on 23 June, giving him until 21 July to register them, and he had shown the commissioner all proof that rules were adhered to. In a statement, standards commissioner David Greenberg confirmed that Lowe had provided evidence indicating that the 28-day window for registering the donations had not passed, and no breach of the Rules had occurred. Reacting to the commissioner’s announcement, Lowe denounced the complaint as a malicious attempt to undermine their inquiry and shut him down.
Lowe expressed his frustration, stating that he promptly provided irrefutable proof that all actions were within the rules once informed of the investigation. He emphasized that the money had arrived in the Rape Gang Inquiry account on June 23rd, and he had sufficient time to register it. In response to the BBC’s report, he mentioned his intention to file a formal complaint regarding their coverage of the story. Following the analysis of over £600,000 donated to Lowe’s crowdfunder, it was established that many donations exceeded the parliamentary limit for disclosure.
Elected as a Reform UK MP for Great Yarmouth in 2024, Lowe was suspended from the party in March amid allegations of threats towards the party’s chairman. In a turn of events, in May, the Crown Prosecution Service opted not to press charges over the alleged threats. Lowe painted himself as a victim of a “political assassination attempt” during a BBC Newsnight interview. Following his suspension, Lowe launched his crowdfunder, criticizing ministers for failing victims and accusing the political class of cowardice. The Rape Gang Inquiry, spearheaded by Lowe, has undertaken extensive FOI requests to uncover critical information relating to rape gangs, promising transparency and accountability in its findings
