Empowering young people into work

Liverpool City Council is dedicated to supporting residents in their employment journey, whether they are re-entering the workforce after a period of unemployment or seeking their first job. Individuals with learning disabilities or autism often face challenges in finding employment, as only 4.1 percent in the north west are in paid roles despite a desire to work. To address this, the council has implemented a successful supported internship program for over five years, assisting approximately 50 young individuals with learning difficulties or neurodivergent traits annually in gaining work experience through a tailored work-study initiative.

Introducing a new form of assistance for this demographic, the Empower Job Design Programme aims to customize or create job roles to align with an individual’s skills, ensuring a better fit for employment. As part of #YouthEmploymentWeek observed from 7th to 11th July, Charlie Newall, a participant from the inaugural cohort in September 2024, is being celebrated for his accomplishments. Enrolling in Liverpool in Work’s Ways to Work program, Charlie underwent training at Granby Adult Learning Centre to enhance his employment skills, supported by his job coach, Stephen Patterson.

Identifying the West Derby Medical Centre as an ideal location for Charlie, Patterson arranged a paid placement for him in the admin team for three months, which was later extended by an additional six months. Currently, Charlie is striving to meet objectives that will secure him a permanent role within the NHS. For those interested in the Empower Job Design Programme, inquiries can be directed to interntowork@liverpool.gov.uk. Employers looking to participate can offer roles through the Young Person’s Guarantee, which facilitates the recruitment of a young individual for a six-month paid work experience period.
