UK weather: Heatwave to peak this weekend as temperatures soar to 34C

The United Kingdom is bracing for another heatwave as temperatures are expected to rise above the official heatwave threshold in the coming days. According to the UK’s Health Security Agency, yellow heat health alerts are in force across central and southern parts of England as the mercury climbs.

Thursday will see warmer temperatures for much of England and Wales, with highs ranging from 24 to 28C. The south Midlands, central southern, and south-east England are expected to be the hottest areas with temperatures reaching 30 to 32C. As the heatwave intensifies, Scotland and Northern Ireland will also experience rising temperatures, potentially hitting the hottest day of the year for both regions.

Despite the scorching conditions, it is unlikely that the UK will surpass the highest temperature recorded this year of 35.8C in Faversham, Kent. As the heatwave progresses, temperatures will peak at 34C on Friday and possibly continue into Saturday. Wimbledon attendees should also prepare for the heat, as the women and men’s finals over the weekend are forecasted to have temperatures exceeding 30C.

Although the heatwave will bring hotter weather to more regions, temperatures are not expected to exceed the record-breaking levels seen in previous years. As the week progresses, cooler air is expected to move in from the north-west, bringing relief from the scorching conditions. The UK can anticipate a gradual decrease in temperatures as the week comes to a close, falling below the heatwave threshold by Tuesday. Climate scientists warn that with climate change, heatwaves will become more frequent, intense, and prolonged in the future
