PC denies losing control in Manchester Airport brawl, trial hears

In the aftermath of an alleged assault at Manchester Airport, a police officer is denying claims that he “lost control” when dealing with two brothers. Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, are accused of assaulting the officer after he responded to reports of an incident at the Starbucks cafe in Terminal 2 arrivals. The altercation escalated when Mr. Amaaz reportedly headbutted a customer.

During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, a photograph of injuries sustained by the defendants’ mother, allegedly caused during the arrest attempt of Mr. Amaaz in the terminal car park, was presented to the jury. PC Zachary Marsden, the officer involved, stated that it was unclear if his actions led to her injuries. Despite this, PC Marsden insisted that he was not solely responsible for causing harm to Mrs. Akhtar.

Witnesses described seeing Mrs. Akhtar kneel beside her son after he was knocked down by a Taser discharge. The defense, led by Imran Khan KC, accused PC Marsden of using excessive force, specifically suggesting that he caused Mrs. Akhtar’s injuries by misusing the Taser. The officer maintained that his actions were necessary given the circumstances, emphasizing that he felt physically at risk during the incident.

Additionally, mobile phone footage provided to the jury showcased PC Marsden using Pava spray on a bystander, justifying his actions as necessary due to the situation being “beyond verbal reasoning.” Mr. Khan questioned the officer’s decision to use force on the bystander, to which PC Marsden explained that he perceived a potential confrontational situation that needed to be controlled. The ongoing trial includes allegations of assault against PC Marsden and other officers, and the defendants from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, have all pleaded not guilty to the charges
