A number of Instagram users have come forward with their stories of experiencing unimaginable stress after being wrongfully accused of violating the platform’s rules on child sexual exploitation. These individuals reported having their accounts permanently disabled by parent company Meta, only to have them reinstated once their cases were brought to the attention of the media, including the BBC. One of the affected individuals shared, “I’ve lost endless hours of sleep, felt isolated. It’s been horrible, not to mention having an accusation like that over my head.”

David, a user from Aberdeen, Scotland, was suspended from Instagram on June 4th over allegations of violating Meta’s community standards related to child sexual exploitation. He discovered a Reddit thread where others shared similar experiences of unwarranted bans. After the BBC intervened on his behalf, David’s account was reinstated. Similarly, Faisal from London, who had his accounts suspended on June 6th, saw his accounts restored after the BBC’s involvement. Another user, Salim, also had his accounts reinstated after being falsely accused of child sexual exploitation violations.
When asked for comment on these cases, Meta declined to respond to inquiries about wrongful accusations of child abuse offenses. However, the company acknowledged the possibility of wrongful account suspensions in South Korea. Despite increasing pressure from regulators to ensure platform safety, Meta maintains that it takes action against accounts that violate policies and offers an appeal process for users who believe a mistake has been made. The company utilizes a combination of human oversight and technology to identify and remove rule-breaking accounts, including those related to child sexual exploitation
