A £5 million transformation to make Greatie even greater

Liverpool City Council is on the brink of approving plans for a major rejuvenation project for Great Homer Street Market, known as Greatie Market, one of the city’s historical trading centers. The proposed investment of up to £5 million is part of a larger regeneration initiative aimed at boosting development opportunities, enhancing connectivity, and improving communities across Liverpool North, stretching from Greatie Market to Bootle town center. The funding from the government’s Strategic Futures Panel will be used to refurbish and expand the market, creating a modern and inclusive space for traders and shoppers.

The revitalization project includes refurbishing the existing market building, adding new food and beverage units with retractable seating, installing a large external canopy, and improving layout and accessibility. The goal is to increase footfall, extend visitor time spent in the market, and support local businesses by creating a more attractive and functional space for traders. Additionally, the project entails demolishing derelict industrial units to improve access, safety, and visibility for future development opportunities. If approved, the transformation process will involve procuring consultants to design the upgrade, hiring contractors for demolition work, and appointing a design and build contractor for the refurbishment.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Members are optimistic about the future of Greatie Market following extensive consultations with traders and residents. The investment will not only upgrade the market but also create a vibrant destination that celebrates local entrepreneurship and community spirit. The project aligns with the larger vision of the Liverpool North New Town plan to regenerate the area through housing, transport, and public realm improvements. The aim is to reconnect and revitalize North Liverpool, honoring its heritage while unlocking its full potential for future generations
