A suspect has been accused in connection with the tragic death of a scientist who was discovered severely injured on a street in Dundee. Dr Fortune Gomo, a 39-year-old native of Zimbabwe, was declared deceased at the scene of the incident, which occurred on South Road around 16:25 on Saturday. The individual in question, a 20-year-old, is scheduled to appear in Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday. Dr Gomo, employed by Scottish Water, resided locally and was an alumnus of the University of Dundee.
The interim principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Nigel Seaton, expressed the university’s “shock” at the untimely passing of the former research assistant. Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, heading the investigation, conveyed his sympathies to Dr Gomo’s family during this deeply sorrowful period. He assured that steps were being taken to support them and emphasized the importance of respecting their privacy. Det Supt Sharp disclosed that multiple leads were being pursued by his team as they delved into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Individuals possessing relevant information are urged to reach out to law enforcement. A local woman, visibly moved by the tragedy, left flowers at the scene, her scarf bearing the colors of the Zimbabwean flag.
Dr Gomo’s academic journey, from being a PhD student and research assistant in geography at the University of Dundee to her recent role at Scottish Water as a senior service planner in water resource planning, was highlighted by Prof Seaton.
