Heatwave peak set to bring 34C to parts of UK

The UK is currently experiencing a heatwave that is set to peak on Monday, potentially making it one of the hottest June days ever. The Met Office has predicted temperatures reaching 34C in central and eastern parts of England, a level that has only been exceeded three times since 1960. As a result, Glastonbury Festival is advising attendees to leave before 06:00 BST to avoid the heat, while Wimbledon may see its hottest opening day on record.

Amber alerts have been issued for five regions in the UK, including the East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and the East of England. This means that weather impacts are expected to be felt across the entire health service, with a “severe” risk of wildfires, according to the London Fire Brigade. Travel delays are also likely in these areas, as the high temperatures could lead to a rise in deaths among the vulnerable population, as warned by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

In contrast, Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland are expected to experience cloud cover and heavy rain on Monday, with temperatures in the mid to high teens. Despite this, night-time lows are still predicted to stay as high as 20C in some areas heading into Tuesday. This heatwave marks the second of the year, with London Fire Brigade assistant Thomas Goodall attributing the severe risk of wildfires to a combination of low rainfall in recent months and the prolonged hot weather.

To stay safe during the heatwave, the UKHSA advises the public to avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 and 15:00, and to wear hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen when outdoors. With the extreme temperatures persisting, it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and stay hydrated
