Heatwave temperatures to hit 30C today as heatwave continues

London is currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures predicted to reach 30C for the second day. The Met Office has forecast highs of 28C in the east of England and the Midlands. An amber heat health alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), is in effect until Tuesday at 18:00 BST, with temperatures expected to peak on Monday. This is the second amber alert in a fortnight, indicating that weather impacts are likely to affect the entire health service.

The amber alert covers London, the East Midlands, South East, South West, and East of England. Additionally, a yellow heat alert has been issued for Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as the West Midlands. UKHSA has warned that temperatures in the early to mid-30s (C) will be widespread at the peak of the heatwave on Monday. The country’s current record high for June is 35.6C, set in Southampton’s Mayflower Park in 1957 and matched in Camden Square, North London, in 1976.

In light of the ongoing heatwave, Director of Operations at London Ambulance Service, Darren Farmer, emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol. Farmer also advised the public to stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day and to take medication promptly. Carrie Johnson, wife of a former prime minister, advised breastfeeding mothers to prioritize staying hydrated, after she herself was hospitalized for severe dehydration. Meanwhile, temperatures at Glastonbury festival, entering its final day, are expected to hit 27C on Sunday, with the hottest year on record for the festival being in 2017, when paramedics treated numerous individuals due to the high temperatures
