Habibur Masum guilty of murdering wife in Bradford knife attack

A murder case in Yorkshire has taken a deep dive as a man was found guilty of killing his wife in a horrific incident. Habibur Masum took the life of Kulsuma Akter by stabbing her more than 25 times while she was with their seven-month-old son in Bradford. The court heard that Ms. Akter, who had been in a refuge since January due to an earlier threat from Masum, was brutally attacked by him in broad daylight.

On the day of the tragic event, Masum tracked Ms. Akter down to the city where she thought she was safe, only to meet a horrifying fate at the hands of her husband. Masum, who initially denied murder but later admitted to manslaughter and possessing a bladed weapon, displayed violent behavior before the fatal incident. The court also convicted him of assault, making threats, and stalking relating to the attack.

Despite Masum’s claims of not intending to harm his wife, evidence presented in court painted a picture of escalating threats and attempts to coerce Ms. Akter into coming back to him. The tragedy sheds light on the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have. The sentencing for Masum is scheduled for July 22, with the hope that justice will be served for the victim and her family.

Investigations by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into prior contacts Ms. Akter had with authorities revealed no breaches in professionalism. The case serves as a somber reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing signs of abuse in relationships to prevent such senseless tragedies
