London Gateway cocaine worth £96m seized in 'one of largest' busts

A massive £96m worth of cocaine has been confiscated by Border Force officers in what is being hailed as one of the biggest drug seizures in the last ten years. The drugs were discovered on a container vessel that had arrived at the London Gateway port from Panama earlier this month. The haul, weighing 2.4 tonnes, required the moving of 37 large containers at the port in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, in order to uncover it.

According to the Home Office, this seizure ranks as the sixth largest cocaine bust ever recorded. Specialist maritime officers were responsible for intercepting the drugs as part of an intelligence-led operation. The Border Force issued a statement emphasizing the significance of this interception in dealing a financial and operational blow to organized crime groups responsible for importing the cocaine into the country.

Charlie Eastaugh, the maritime director of the Border Force, highlighted the dedication of their officers in staying ahead of criminal gangs and disrupting their activities. He emphasized the use of intelligence and international law enforcement cooperation in dismantling these criminal operations. Additionally, efforts are being made to provide training programs in Latin America to prevent the entry of drugs into the UK.

Government minister Seema Malhotra condemned the drug gangs attempting to bring illegal substances into the UK, describing them as a menace to society. She assured that no efforts would be spared in pursuing organized crime groups that spread addiction, suffering, and death within British communities
