Man stabbed his partner 27 times in fatal Chirnside attack

A tragic incident unfolded in Chirnside in the Borders, where a man viciously attacked his partner, Megan Hughes, stabbing her 27 times. Corey Dryden, 31, pleaded guilty to the murder at their home on Windram Road earlier this year. The High Court in Edinburgh revealed that police swiftly apprehended Dryden following the brutal assault, with him later claiming he couldn’t recall his actions that led to the tragic death of Hughes.

During the police interrogation, Dryden broke down into tears, expressing his love for the victim. Prosecutors shared that he admitted to repeatedly striking Hughes on the head and body with both a knife and a hammer during the fatal attack. The couple, who had known each other since childhood, had only begun cohabitating in July the prior year. Hughes, a mother to two children from a previous relationship, tragically lost her life in the harrowing incident.

Neighbors reported hearing distressing cries for help from the couple’s residence in the early hours of February 9th, prompting a call to the authorities from Dryden hours later. Responding officers found Hughes unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom, clutching a knife in her hand. Despite efforts to revive her, paramedics declared her deceased. Pathologists confirmed the cause of death as stab wounds to the chest and neck during a post-mortem examination the following day. The court deferred sentencing for Dryden pending a background report and remanded him in custody
