In a move to enhance age verification for users, Pornhub and other major adult websites have announced their plans to implement improved age checks starting next month. Parent company Aylo has stated they will be adopting “government approved age assurance methods,” although the specifics on how users will be required to confirm their age over 18 have not yet been disclosed. The current practice of simply clicking a button, which is the only requirement for accessing adult sites, has been deemed insufficient by regulator Ofcom.
Ofcom has emphasized the need for stricter age verification measures for adult sites, in line with how adult services are regulated in the real world. The Online Safety Act mandates that adult websites incorporate “robust” age checking techniques by the summer deadline. These measures could include requests for photo identification or conducting credit card verifications before allowing users to access explicit content.
Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom’s group director of online safety, highlighted the importance of protecting youngsters from potentially harmful products online, such as pornography. The assurances from Aylo and other porn providers like Stripchat and Streamate regarding the implementation of new age verification checks signal a shift towards better online safety practices. Pornhub, the most popular porn site globally, has come under regulatory scrutiny for its efforts to prevent underage access to adult material.
Amid increasing scrutiny, the European Commission launched an investigation into Pornhub and other adult platforms at the end of May, while Ofcom in the UK is investigating several adult sites for potential violations of child safety regulations. Aylo’s vice president of brand and community, Alex Kekesi, commended Ofcom for presenting flexible age verification methods that are less intrusive compared to those in other jurisdictions. He praised the regulator’s robust protection model as a step towards smarter and more effective solutions for ensuring online safety. Aylo aims to implement the new age verification methods on its sites by 25 July, with details on the specific verification techniques yet to be revealed
