Dundee University to receive further £40m support

Dundee University has received a much-needed lifeline with an additional £40m injection from the Scottish government to help address its financial crisis. Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth announced that the funding, which will be distributed over two academic years, comes with specific conditions to ensure accountability.

According to Gilruth, the decision to provide the funding was not about rewarding failure but rather addressing an “unprecedented and unique situation” that the university finds itself in. The institution is currently facing a deficit of £35m and recently came under scrutiny following a critical independent report detailing its financial woes.

The allocation of this funding by the Scottish Funding Council, at the behest of ministers, signifies the gravity of the situation at Dundee University. Gilruth emphasized that careful due diligence would be conducted before any of the funds are spent to ensure they are utilized effectively.

To mitigate the financial challenges, the university is in the process of shedding 300 roles through a voluntary staff reduction program, a stark contrast to the initial forecast of 700 job cuts. The additional funding from the Scottish government will undoubtedly provide some much-needed relief as Dundee University works towards stabilizing its financial situation
