Following the US airstrikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, Sir Keir Starmer has urged Iran to resume negotiations and return to the table for discussions. The UK prime minister emphasized the importance of stability in the region and labeled Iran’s nuclear program as a serious threat to international security. Despite being informed in advance, the UK did not participate in the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear aspirations are peaceful, while the US claimed responsibility for targeting three nuclear facilities in Iran – Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordo. The situation escalated further with Israel launching its own operation against Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes from Iran and continued exchange of fire between the two nations. President Donald Trump hailed the operation as a success and warned of further attacks if Iran did not seek peace promptly.
Iran’s ambassador to the UK, Seyed Ali Mousavi, expressed that Iran is assessing the scale and nature of its response to the strikes. Despite no reports of increased off-site radiation, Iran’s Foreign Minister denounced the US airstrikes as outrageous and warned of lasting consequences. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, characterized the overnight strikes as a dangerous escalation.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch supported the US action, viewing it as a necessary step against a regime that promotes global terror and directly endangers the UK. Earlier appeals made by Starmer to de-escalate the conflict through negotiations were highlighted, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a heightened risk of escalation in the region.
