A vehicle fire in the Conwy Tunnel on the A55 led to emergency services declaring a major incident, causing dark plumes of smoke to billow from the tunnel. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported, but nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution due to the presence of smoke in the area. The fire has since been brought under control, but due to safety assessments, the tunnel will remain closed in both directions for the time being.
According to the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, detailed inspections will need to be conducted to assess any potential damage before the tunnel can safely reopen. With an average of 40,000 vehicles passing through the tunnel daily, diversions have been put in place, resulting in heavy traffic in and around areas like Colwyn Bay, Conwy, Llanrwst, and Betws-y-Coed. As a result, Arriva Buses Wales announced that several services would be rerouted until further notice, impacting areas like Dwygyfylchi, Conwy, Deganwy, Conwy, and Llandudno.
Eyewitness accounts of the incident described how Eira D’Arcy, 73, and her husband found themselves stuck behind the vehicle that caught fire. D’Arcy recounted seeing small flames under a stationary lorry a few cars ahead of them in the tunnel, prompting concerns about potential explosions. Despite the unsettling situation, they were able to navigate through the smoke and safely exit the tunnel. Traffic cameras showed significant delays back to the Colwyn Bay junction as a result of the incident, further exacerbating the already congested roads in the surrounding areas
