UK weather: Temperatures to soar above 30C as heatwave expected

The UK is bracing for soaring temperatures as forecasts predict highs of up to 30C (86F) in some parts of the country later this week. This surge in temperature is expected to mark the beginning of the first heatwave of 2025, with balmy nights in store as well, with temperatures in the high teens. Yellow heat health alerts are currently in place for most of England until Sunday, highlighting the potential health risks posed by the hot weather, especially for vulnerable groups.

Temperatures are expected to peak at different times across various regions of the UK this week. The south and east, the Midlands, and the South West of England are anticipated to experience some of the highest temperatures on Thursday, while the north and west will begin feeling the heat on Friday, with places like Aviemore, Strabane, and Aberystwyth possibly reaching 28C or higher. Northern Ireland, western Scotland, and west Wales are likely to see temperatures reaching 24 to 28C by Friday.

As the weekend approaches, east Wales, eastern Scotland, and much of England will see their peak temperatures on Saturday, with highs of 28 to 31C expected. There is a possibility of temperatures reaching 33C in some areas of south-east England and East Anglia. The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat-health alerts for all regions of England, except the North East and North West, lasting until Sunday evening, advising preparation for vulnerable groups and the elderly.

The rising temperatures are attributed to a developing area of high pressure bringing hot weather from other parts of Western Europe. As climate change continues to drive global temperatures upwards, the risk of extreme temperatures exceeding 40C in the UK is rapidly increasing. Scientists warn that such high temperatures would have been “almost impossible” without human-induced climate change. Despite the heatwave conditions, some areas may experience showers or thunderstorms over the weekend, providing temporary relief from the scorching temperatures
