Dan Hunt of BBC News reported from Leicester that Susan Kohli, daughter of the late Bhim Kohli, expressed dissatisfaction with the sentencing of his 15-year-old killer and called for tougher penalties for young offenders. Bhim Kohli tragically passed away after being racially abused and attacked while walking his dog at Franklin Park in Leicestershire. The incident, which resulted in Mr. Kohli’s death in the hospital, led to a seven-year custodial sentence for the 15-year-old boy responsible for manslaughter, and a three-year youth rehabilitation order for the 13-year-old girl involved.

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC detailed the horrifying seven-and-a-half minute aggressive episode that led to Mr. Kohli’s fatal injury. The boy racially abused and physically assaulted Mr. Kohli, while the girl encouraged the attack and filmed it. The fatal injury was a spinal cord fracture caused by the aggression. Mrs. Kohli emphasized the need for accountability for young offenders who commit adult crimes, as she feels the current system does not appropriately punish their actions.

Peter Bedford, MP for Mid Leicestershire, and Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, have taken action by writing to the Attorney General’s Office to request a review of the sentencing handed down to the young offenders. The AGO is considering the requests within the statutory 28-day period for potential referrals to the Court of Appeal. Despite the grief and anger from the victim’s family, former solicitor general Lord Edward Garnier highlighted the youth justice system’s focus on preventing reoffending and considering the welfare of young offenders during sentencing.

Judge Mr. Justice Turner acknowledged the severity of the cowardly attack on an elderly man during the sentencing at Leicester Crown Court. However, he took into account mitigating factors such as the absence of prior convictions and a challenging home environment for the teenage perpetrator. The judge also emphasized the harmful impact of a short custodial sentence on the girl involved, opting for a different approach to address the situation
