Soccer Aid was a massive success this year, with Big Zuu and Tevez putting on a show that wowed the crowd at Old Trafford and raised an impressive £15m for the children’s charity Unicef. In a thrilling match between England and a World XI made up of celebrities and former footballers, the World XI emerged victorious with a 5-4 win. The World XI had to come back from a 3-0 deficit, but thanks to four goals from Carlos Tevez, they were able to turn the game around.
Among the star-studded lineup were former football talents and celebrities like Louis Tomlinson, Angry Ginge, Diamond from Gladiator, Richard Gadd, Sir Mo Farah, and Bella Ramsey. While Tomlinson received cheers from the crowd whenever he touched the ball, it was England’s Angry Ginge who stole the show with his impressive performance. He was named player of the match for his stellar defensive play, including a crucial goal-saving clearance against Brazilian legend Rivaldo.
Rapper and TV personality Big Zuu made his mark on the match by scoring the winning goal for the World XI. Zuu had predicted his goal before stepping onto the pitch and celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘siuuu’ gesture after beating comedian Paddy McGuinness, who was in goal for England. Tevez, who famously moved from Manchester United to Manchester City in 2009, put on a masterclass performance, scoring four goals after coming on at halftime with his team trailing.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney made history by scoring the fastest goal in Soccer Aid history, just four minutes into the game. Rooney, who was also taking up a player-coach role for the England team, was assisted by actor James Nelson-Joyce. The match, which was full of exciting moments and star performances, once again highlighted the importance of Soccer Aid in raising funds for Unicef
