Man arrested over shooting of Scots in Spanish bar

BBC Scotland home affairs correspondent David Cowan reported that a man suspected of killing two senior members of a Scottish organized crime group in a bar in Spain has been apprehended. The suspect was arrested in Liverpool by Merseyside Police based on an international arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. The victims, Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46, were shot at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola on May 31. Both men were associated with the Lyons family, a significant organized crime group in western Scotland.

Merseyside Police disclosed that the 44-year-old suspect appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday morning and has been detained in custody pending further court appearances. Lyons Jnr and Monaghan were watching the Champions League final with friends when they were attacked at the bar on the town’s beachfront. Lyons Jnr succumbed to a single bullet outside the bar, while CCTV footage showed the assailant chasing Monaghan inside the pub and fatally shooting him.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Police Scotland released a statement clarifying that there is no evidence to suggest the murders were connected to an ongoing gangland rivalry in Scotland. Despite more than 40 arrests in relation to violent incidents, including alleged attempted murders and firebombings, authorities have found no indication that the killings were orchestrated in Scotland. A longstanding feud between the Lyons and Daniels families has led to a series of violent confrontations, with Monaghan previously accused of involvement in the killing of Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll, an enforcer for the Daniels family. Monaghan survived an attempted shooting in Glasgow in 2017 before reportedly relocating to Spain. Lyons Jnr also survived a prior attack in 2006 attributed to Carroll, showcasing the enduring animosity between the rival groups spanning two decades
