Liverpool City Council is in the process of developing a fresh approach to supporting unpaid carers in the city with a new Carers Strategy. They are actively seeking input from residents and carers to shape the future of these support services.

One of the individuals sharing their experience is Lynne, a dedicated carer from Liverpool who cares for her elderly sister, Nancy. Lynne, who is 69 years old, provides care for Nancy, who is 88 and has been living with Alzheimer’s for the past five years. Despite the challenges, Lynne continues to care for Nancy, ensuring she has the necessary support and assistance in her daily life.

Nancy lives independently with the help of professional carers who visit her three times a day. However, Lynne supplements this care by assisting Nancy with daily tasks such as shopping, laundry, and accompanying her on outings. Although Lynne values the support she receives from the Carers Centre, she expresses the difficulties in coordinating her own needs with Nancy’s care, often feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by the responsibilities.

Acknowledging the strains on resources, Lynne emphasizes the importance of a seamless support system for carers to access help when needed, without facing long waiting times or bureaucratic hurdles. She believes that the forthcoming Carers Strategy will play a vital role in enhancing support for individuals like herself and encourages carers of all ages to participate and contribute to shaping the future of care services in Liverpool
