Plans for a controversial holiday park at Loch Lomond have been put on hold by the Scottish government. Theme park operator Flamingo Land had hoped to build a £40m resort called Lomond Banks, complete with a waterpark, monorail, hotel, and restaurants. The national park authority had initially rejected the proposal, citing concerns about environmental and nature conservation policies.
Minister for Public Finance, Ivan McKee, has decided to recall the plans, stating that the development raises issues of national significance due to its potential impact on Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. This means that the appeal will now be determined at a national level. McKee, who had previously resisted calls for ministerial intervention, will now make the final decision on the project.
The original proposal faced protests and was initially turned down by the national park authority. However, the Scottish government reporter intended to grant permission for the development pending a legal agreement between Flamingo Land and the park. This decision was met with criticism, with some arguing that the development would cause irreversible damage to the iconic location. Scottish Greens MSP Ross Greer welcomed McKee’s latest announcement, calling it “the right move” given the overwhelming evidence of the negative impact on the environment.
Concerns have been raised about flood risks at the proposed site, with a vote in the Scottish Parliament on the issue led by Scottish Labour. There has been widespread disappointment with the decision to approve the park plans, which some believe goes against the will of the local community. Flamingo Land first submitted plans for the site in 2018 but withdrew them after negative feedback.
