A nurse who deceived her way into caring for infants has been removed from her position. Tanya Nasir, a 45-year-old from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, managed to secure a role as the ward manager on the neonatal unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend by falsely claiming to be a highly trained neonatal nurse and an Army combat medic in 2019. However, it was later revealed that Nasir had lied about her qualifications, leading to her being convicted of nine counts of fraud and false representation. She was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison in October 2024.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel determined that Nasir’s deceitful actions endangered the lives of vulnerable patients, potentially resulting in catastrophic outcomes. Despite spending four months as the ward manager, Nasir was suspended when discrepancies were discovered in her nursing registration information. It was uncovered that she had fabricated a reference from an NHS email account belonging to a former colleague in London. Furthermore, Nasir concocted stories about her extensive experience in military and humanitarian work with organizations like Oxfam and the Red Cross, as well as her background in intensive care, A&E medicine, and children’s palliative care.
During the NMC fitness to practise hearing on 23 May, Nasir did not attend and displayed no signs of regret or understanding for her actions, according to NMC representative Naa-Adjeley Barnor. Barnor highlighted Nasir’s prior conviction for welfare benefits fraud in 2010 and expressed concerns about the potential for her to engage in similar fraudulent behavior in the future. The panel noted that Nasir’s efforts to conceal her deceit demonstrated a calculated and premeditated approach, indicative of deep-seated behavioral issues. Consequently, it was deemed necessary to strip Nasir of her nursing credentials as the most suitable and proportionate disciplinary measure
