Richard Tice denies Reform UK in chaos after Zia Yusuf returns

Following a tumultuous 48 hours that saw Reform UK’s chairman Zia Yusuf resign only to return in a different role, Deputy Leader Richard Tice has reaffirmed the party’s direction, stating that they are fully aware of their actions. The saga began on Thursday when Yusuf abruptly stepped down, citing on social media that his efforts in getting the party elected were not a good utilization of his time. However, just two days later, he announced his comeback to head the party’s unit focused on identifying expenditure cuts at local councils, taking inspiration from the US Department of Government Efficiency.

Tice, appearing on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, acknowledged the challenging nature of chairing a political party, describing it as a demanding and grueling task. He mentioned that Yusuf, who had managed the position for 11 months, was essentially burnt out. The rapid expansion of the party had necessitated a reorganization, prompting Yusuf’s transition to oversee the Doge unit, a move that Tice welcomed.

Yusuf’s initial resignation statement on social media was brief and did not delve into the specifics behind his decision. However, it coincided with his criticism of Reform’s recent MP Sarah Pochin, who had raised the issue of banning the burka during Prime Minister’s Questions. When asked about Pochin’s actions, Yusuf, who is of Muslim faith, distanced himself, stating he was unaware of her question and its lack of party policy backing.

Despite the turmoil, Yusuf announced his comeback, attributing his initial departure to sheer exhaustion after months of intense labor. Party leader Nigel Farage condemned the abuse directed at Yusuf, admitting that the resignation was an overreaction resulting from the mistreatment. While outsiders viewed the situation as chaotic, Tice remained resolute in the party’s clarity of purpose, emphasizing their strategic direction and conviction in their choices. Plans are in place to appoint new leadership for the party in the upcoming week
