Olly Alexander, singer and actor, has shared that he is entering a new phase in his life. He recently announced his upcoming role in the West End after parting ways with his record label. Alexander will be starring in the National Theatre’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest when it moves to the West End in September. This marks his return to acting following his work on Channel 4’s acclaimed 2021 drama, It’s A Sin.
Taking on the role of Algernon, Alexander will be stepping into the shoes previously filled by Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa. The play, which first premiered in 1895, follows two young men who adopt false identities in a farcical comedy filled with mistaken identities and clever wordplay. Alexander expressed his excitement for the opportunity, describing The Importance of Being Earnest as a brilliant play that satirizes societal norms and expectations.
Reflecting on his career thus far, Alexander noted the changing landscape of the music industry. After achieving success with his band Years & Years and as a solo artist, he decided to part ways with his record label following the release of his album Polari. He emphasized the need for artists to have a direct connection with their audience, highlighting the outdated model of the traditional music industry. Despite his current focus on acting, Alexander remains open to returning to music in the future on his own terms.
In light of his new role and departure from the music industry, Alexander looks forward to the stability and routine of performing in the West End. He cherishes the idea of having a home base in London where he can enjoy the theater every night. Alexander’s journey reflects his evolving career trajectory as he explores new opportunities in the entertainment industry
