Social housing: Stormont target falls short by 1,000 homes

Funding for new social houses in Stormont’s budget falls short of the Northern Ireland Executive’s target for this year. The Programme for Government aimed to start work on 5,850 new build social homes by 2027, but only about 1,000 new homes will be funded this year. This is a significant decrease from the 1,504 homes started last year and far below the target of 2,000 new starts annually.

Recent figures show that 49,083 households in Northern Ireland are on a social housing waiting list, highlighting the urgent need for more affordable housing. The Department for Communities, responsible for funding social housing, has allocated £63m for this purpose. However, the department’s total capital budget of around £270m is primarily allocated to existing projects, leaving little room for additional social housing initiatives.

While the department can request more funding through budget reallocation exercises like monitoring rounds, there is no guarantee of how much money will be available or where it will be allocated. To stay on track with the Programme for Government target, the department would require an extra £62m in funding. This underscores the challenges in meeting the demand for social housing and the need for increased investment in affordable accommodation in Northern Ireland
