Ian Youngs, a culture reporter, shared the inspiring story of Michael Cullen, also known as Speedo Mick, who went from sleeping rough in Liverpool to raising £1m by doing charity walks in all weathers in just his swimming trunks. His incredible journey is now being celebrated in a stage musical. Similar to how Clark Kent transforms into Superman, Cullen becomes Speedo Mick when he dons his tight blue trunks, and he described feeling a change when he puts them on, becoming more fearless.
Unlike Superman’s cape and tights, Speedo Mick only has a pair of walking boots, an Everton FC scarf, and a woolly hat. Through rain, shine, and snow, Cullen has traversed the British Isles bare-chested for charity, facing extreme challenges like walking up the tallest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales in mid-winter. Despite harsh conditions, like being in minus 18 degrees at the top of Ben Nevis, Cullen’s determination and change in mindset when he puts on his Speedos drive him forward.
Having come from a difficult background in Liverpool marred by substance abuse and homelessness, Cullen found solace in transforming his negative experiences into positive actions.
