British woman accused of drug offences tells BBC of Sri Lanka jail conditions

Charlotte May Lee, a 21-year-old British woman from south London, was arrested in Sri Lanka earlier this month for allegedly trying to smuggle 46kg of cannabis into the country. She shared her experience of the jail conditions where she is currently being held, saying she sleeps on a thin mattress on the concrete floor in a cell with five other women. Despite not yet being charged, if found guilty, she could face up to 25 years behind bars.

Arriving in Sri Lanka to renew her Thai visa, Ms Lee explained she had travelled from Bangkok to Colombo, where she was arrested. She made a court appearance as the investigation into her case continues. Her lawyer, Sampath Perera, is working on a bail application that may take up to three months, as per Sri Lankan law where those in custody must appear in court every 14 days.

In a recent court appearance at Negombo Magistrate’s Court, Ms Lee was visibly upset as authorities presented the alleged 46kg of cannabis found in her suitcases. Her lawyer questioned if the materials had been tested by government authorities to confirm if they were indeed illegal substances. The magistrate ordered a test and report to be submitted promptly. Ms Lee’s next court date is set for July 13, with suspicions of drug possession and smuggling still looming over her.

The young woman, who has not been able to speak to her family since her arrest, tries to maintain a positive outlook despite the challenging situation. She finds solace in fellow English-speaking inmates, acknowledging the uncertainty that surrounds her and others in the prison. With the upcoming legal proceedings and the potential consequences she faces, Ms Lee remains focused on coping with her current reality
