After a car ploughed into football fans during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade, police have been given additional time to question a man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The incident occurred on Water Street in the city centre, and a total of 79 casualties were identified, with seven people still in hospital receiving treatment. Specifically, a 53-year-old man from West Derby was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs after the Ford Galaxy he was driving followed an ambulance into the road.

Under the laws pertaining to the detention of suspects, police have the authority to hold a person in custody for 24 hours without charge, with the possibility of extensions up to a maximum of 96 hours. The suspect in this case was confirmed to be a white British male, and authorities have stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related. The only individual in custody is the 53-year-old man from the West Derby area.

Merseyside Police have appealed to the public to refrain from speculating about the incident and have emphasized their focus on supporting those affected and conducting thorough investigative work. Detectives are currently reviewing CCTV footage to piece together the events leading up to the car ploughing into the crowd. As the city cleans up the aftermath of the parade and the incident, the number of individuals in the hospital is gradually decreasing.
