, however, Nijsse notes: it’s more efficient to leave a battery partly charged than to discharge it fully, so EV batteries might not be fully available for grid services.

It isn’t the only barrier still standing in the way of V2G, adds Schoch. “Charger technology is scattered across many different standards and hardware types, making it difficult for us to predict what a charger is capable of. This is a key area that needs consolidation – for example USB-C has replaced most types of phone chargers.”

The future of a sustainable power system is not just about getting it as clean as possible, but as flexible as possible, too

“For V2G to be really beneficial, we need to be able to rely on vehicles simultaneously offering smart services to allow grid operators to control the system,” says Schoch. This could include controlling the speed of charging and discharging to support grid stability – envisioned as a future where demand response is completely automatic.

“The future of a sustainable power system is not just about getting it as clean as possible, but as flexible as possible, too,” Schoch concludes. “The irony is, by using our cars less, and with the right technological developments, we could end up making them work many times harder than they do today.”
