Update on Colomendy Outdoor Activity Centre

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet will be considering a proposal next week to formally surrender the lease of Colomendy Outdoor Activity Centre. The leaseholder, Kingswood Colomendy Ltd, fell into administration in January. After the administrator confirmed they no longer had any interest in the site, an agreement was reached to have the lease formally surrendered by the administrator following cabinet approval. This would result in the site reverting back to the council as the freehold owner. Colomendy, located near Mold at Loggerheads, has been shut down since January.

Originally built in 1939 to house evacuated children, Colomendy opened its doors in April 1940. Liverpool City Council acquired the site in 1957 to provide educational opportunities for youths from the Merseyside region. Due to financial constraints in the council’s education budget, a decision was made to have a third party operate the site. In June 2007, Kingswood Colomendy Limited was granted a 30-year lease, with the responsibility for all repairs and insurance costs falling on the company.

The annual operational costs for Colomendy are estimated to be around £600,000. Upon approval of the proposal, council officials plan to engage an external agent to explore available options and develop a marketing strategy for the site. Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet member for Growth and Economy, emphasized the significance of surrendering the lease for Colomendy. He acknowledged the need for substantial investments to bring the infrastructure up to standard, along with the associated operational expenses that would make it financially challenging for the council to run the site. The upcoming discussions on the report are scheduled to take place at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 3 June
