The court was informed that Mark Gordon, 50, underwent leg restraints after assaulting two female police officers on a maternity ward following the birth of his first child. Meanwhile, Constance Marten, 38, joined Gordon in denying the manslaughter by gross negligence of their daughter Victoria, who was discovered in a shopping bag in a shed in Brighton in early 2023. The couple also denies causing or allowing the death of a child. Gordon later admitted guilt to assaulting both Det Sgt Delma Jones and PC Sian Beynon at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court.
Det Sgt Jones testified that they were summoned to the postnatal ward of West Wales General Hospital due to concerns raised by medical staff regarding the newborn’s parents’ identity. Upon questioning the father, who identified himself as James Amer, Det Sgt Jones noticed inconsistencies in his information, leading to a confrontation where Gordon’s behavior shifted dramatically. Despite attempts to restrain him, Gordon managed to break free and approach Marten and their child before being subdued by the officers.
During the altercation, PC Beynon utilized her Pava incapacitant spray in an effort to control Gordon’s aggressive behavior. With the assistance of another father at the hospital, the police were eventually able to restrain Gordon before additional officers arrived for his arrest. The incident, lasting around 10 minutes, left Det Sgt Jones with bruises and cuts, a memory she vividly recalls. The trial, which continues, follows a high-profile manhunt for Gordon and Marten after they abandoned their burning vehicle near Bolton, Greater Manchester, and disappeared with Victoria in January 2023
