Liverpool parade: Driver held on suspicion of attempted murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car crashed into football fans during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade. Merseyside Police reported that the driver, a 53-year-old man from the West Derby area of the city, is also being held for dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. The incident took place on Water Street, resulting in 50 people, including children, being treated in the hospital.

Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill confirmed that there were 65 confirmed casualties, with 11 of them still hospitalized but in stable condition. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims mentioned that the driver had followed an ambulance onto Water Street after the roadblock had been temporarily lifted for the ambulance to attend to a person reportedly suffering a heart attack. The incident, however, is not being treated as terrorism.

During the parade, Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram raised concerns about how the suspect’s car managed to access Water Street. As investigations continue, the street remains closed to the public. Witnesses recounted the harrowing experience of the crash, with some initially fearing it was a terrorist attack. Among those affected was Jack Trotter, who sustained injuries to his back and leg but is now recovering with the help of crutches.

Messages of support poured in for the people of Liverpool following the incident, with even royalty expressing their condolences.
