p>But Mone had her defenders too. Close friend, tycoon and business partner Doug Barrowman says: “Have you ever met a perfectionist entrepreneur who doesn’t get it wrong sometimes? Have you ever met a successful entrepreneur who hasn’t failed?
“Let’s be honest and say to everybody out there, are you sharing your opinion with us because you’re pissed off or you actually want to make a change?”
For his part, Anderson says he has no grudge against Mone – he just doesn’t think she should be in the House of Lords.
The 50-year-old businesswoman and campaigner has turned her hand to many things since she left politics, including a jewellery business with Barrowman, developing property in Dubai and the Isle of Man, and fighting plastic pollution in the oceans.
Last year, in a tweet that announced Mone’s plans to go into crypto, Barrowman said: “She wanted to build a lingerie brand, she wanted to go into government and now she’s into crypto.”
But he says that is just a public face. “Trust me, we together look at a lot of different businesses. We’ve done all types of analysis to come to the decision on what we feel is right.”
The Mones have moved to the Isle of Man, and Barrowman says leaving the UK came down to a mixture of the tax implications and the regulatory aspects of their various businesses, including plans for a digital bank.
“Right now, what we’re doing is massive. It’s not about one individual business, it’s about looking at verticals,” he says.
Ross Borland, business director at MJM International, told me: “She has already given a huge amount back to Scotland and the UK.”
“Not only through job creation and international trade, but at a personal level: Inspiration, investing time and money in a huge number of individuals and businesses that would not have been able to move forward without her intervention.
“Therefore, my opinion of Michelle becoming a member of the House of Lords is that it would not only be a personal highlight in her successful and special journey, but also an opportunity for her to provide significant contribution to the current and ongoing debate in the United Kingdom.”
That promotion is ongoing, but Mone can also claim another success. In a 2009 biography she lays claim to more than 60 employees, 60 international awards and a place on the UK Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame.
