Brandon Williams: Ex-Man Utd player sentenced over high-speed crash

Brandon Williams, a former Manchester United player, has been given a suspended prison sentence for dangerous driving after reaching speeds of nearly 100mph (161km/h) before causing a crash. The 24-year-old was driving recklessly in an Audi A3 on the A34 near Handforth, Cheshire, when his car collided with a Ford Fiesta and crashed into the central reservation on August 20, 2023. During the incident, Williams and his female passenger were seen with yellow balloons in their mouths.

Williams, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance, was handed a 14-month jail term suspended for two years by Chester Crown Court. He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work as part of a community order. The court heard that just before the impact, investigators found that Williams was driving at 99mph in a 70mph zone. Witnesses stated that his driving was erratic and excessively fast.

According to reports, the female passengers in the Ford Fiesta described Williams’ driving as too fast and unpredictable. They suffered various physical injuries, including whiplash and bruising, as well as psychological trauma. Williams, who was treated for injuries at a hospital and then taken into custody, admitted to assisting his front-seat passenger in using a balloon, although he was not under the influence of nitrous oxide at the time. His defense lawyer acknowledged his client’s lack of maturity and foolish behavior during the incident.

Despite being scouted by Manchester United at a young age, Williams was released by the club at the end of the 2023-24 season and has been without a team since then. He has been working with two fitness coaches in hopes of landing a new contract this summer. Williams expressed remorse for his actions in court and has been making efforts to improve his physical and mental well-being, supported by references from his coaches and involvement with a homelessness charity. His parents and close friends showed up to support him during the court proceedings
