University students in Liverpool are being offered a convenient and eco-friendly way to get rid of unwanted items as the academic year comes to a close. In a unique collaborative effort, Liverpool City Council, the University of Liverpool’s Guild of Students, and Liverpool John Moores University Students’ Union have come together to kick off the Leave Liverpool Tidy campaign. A specially designated shipping container has been placed on Webster Road in Wavertree, serving as a collection point for donations from students.
The container started accepting donations yesterday, aiming to alleviate the burden on regular waste disposal services. Students are encouraged to drop off items such as clothing, electronics, books, and unopened food to be repurposed or recycled appropriately. The British Heart Foundation and Salvation Army will be responsible for collecting the donations, ensuring they are put to good use. Food items gathered will be given to FareShare Merseyside for distribution.
To facilitate the process, council volunteers will be available to assist students moving out of their accommodations in getting rid of unwanted goods. The container will only be accessible during specified hours, and items should not be left outside of these times. This initiative is part of a larger city-wide project that aims to promote sustainability and encourage students to donate items they no longer need to reduce waste.
In a successful run last year, nearly 36 tonnes of items were collected and repurposed, diverting them from landfills and incineration while raising funds for charity. Additional events and donation pickups are scheduled throughout the month, including opportunities for students to drop off items or have them collected from their homes. The collaborative effort between universities, students’ unions, and council underscores the importance of community involvement and cooperation in tackling waste management challenges
