A massive fire at a maternity hospital in Bristol has forced pregnant women to be evacuated. The blaze, which broke out at St Michael’s Hospital on Southwell Street, caused black smoke to billow into the sky. Fortunately, firefighters from Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
Pregnant women and infants were safely moved outside of the hospital, with midwives providing support by bringing milk and fruit for those affected. One mother-to-be, Jess Hutchinson, expressed feeling frightened upon hearing the fire erupt on the roof where several solar panels were damaged by the flames. The public has been advised to avoid the area surrounding the hospital.
Matthew Burden, from Weston-super-Mare, recounted the harrowing experience of being inside the maternity unit with his wife when the fire erupted. He mentioned that his wife was in labor with their third child, and he anxiously awaited to reunite with her. Despite the chaos, he managed to speak with his partner over the phone, reassuring himself of her safety.
