The Marks & Spencer website has experienced technical difficulties, rendering users unable to access the site as the company grapples with the aftermath of a recent cyber-attack. Customers have been faced with the inability to place online orders for several weeks, and as of Wednesday evening, they were greeted with a message stating: “Sorry you can’t browse the site currently. We’re making some updates and will be back soon.”
In response to the cyber-attack, M&S disclosed that certain personal customer information was compromised, including phone numbers, addresses, and dates of birth. However, the retailer assured customers that sensitive details such as payment information and account passwords were not accessed. Nonetheless, online order histories may have been part of the data breach.
The cyber incident, which occurred over the Easter weekend, initially impacted click-and-collect services and contactless payments. Subsequently, M&S posted a notice on its website acknowledging the unavailability of online ordering. The company anticipates a significant financial impact from the cyber-attack, estimating losses of approximately £300m for the year, signaling a substantial blow to its profits.
Stuart Machin, CEO of M&S, acknowledged the challenges posed by the cyber-attack, describing it as a sophisticated and targeted assault that caused temporary disruptions. Law enforcement authorities are reportedly investigating a group of hackers known as Scattered Spider, who have a history of targeting prominent businesses.
