A trial is set to go ahead for a former Conservative MP who is facing allegations of harassing their ex-wife. Katie Wallis, previously known as Jamie Wallis and using female pronouns, served as the representative for Bridgend from 2019 to 2024. The 40-year-old from Butetown in Cardiff appeared at the city’s magistrates’ court and entered a plea of not guilty to charges of harassing Rebecca Wallis between 14 February and 21 March. The alleged harassment included unwanted phone calls, messages, voice notes, and driving past her residence.
During the court proceedings, Ms. Wallis, the first MP to openly embark on gender transitioning, shared with the court her preference to be addressed as Katie despite being legally known as Jamie. According to Simone Walsh, the prosecutor in the case, the defendant and alleged victim were in a relationship for over 15 years before separating in 2020, with their divorce being finalized in 2024. Walsh highlighted that the defendant’s behavior turned harassive after being informed of the victim’s new relationship.
In defense of her client, Narita Bahra emphasized that there was no ill intention on their part and expressed intentions to request a psychiatric evaluation prior to the trial. The trial, which was scheduled to commence on 17 June, was postponed to allow for further preparations and assessments.
