Uncovering Moodymann’s Detroit hip hop origins

Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature imprint shared the news on Instagram yesterday (May 15), writing: “Our very last 3 Chairs set together – join us all day on May 25, Detroit.”

In a video posted alongside the announcement, Theo Parrish explains: “It will be the last opportunity to see 3 Chairs perform. I’m looking forward to this.”

3 Chairs first teamed up in 1997 as a trio between Moodymann, Theo Parrish, and Rick Wilhite, before Marcellus Pittman joined in 2003.

Together, the supergroup have released one album, multiple singles and EPs, and several compilations, including 2021’s ‘3 Chairs Collection (1997-2013)’, which compiled 35 tracks from their career.

10 artists carrying the torch for Detroit dance music, according to Dantiez Saunderson

On their self-titled 2004 album, the group enlisted the likes of Norma Jean Bell, Amp Fiddler, Bubz Fiddler, and Urban Tribe’s Sherard Ingram.
